South Sudan is set to embark on a significant milestone in its democratic journey, with plans underway to initiate voter registration in June.

After enduring prolonged delays, the nation is gearing up for long-awaited elections scheduled for later this year, as announced by the head of the National Elections Commission on Tuesday.

In the context of a civil war that ended in 2018 and South Sudan's 2011 independence, elections were initially scheduled to take place before February 2023. Nevertheless, both the opposition and the transitional government agreed to postpone the election until late 2024 in a determined attempt to create stability and consensus.

The National Elections body's chairperson, Abednego Akok Kacuol, disclosed to media in Juba, the country's capital, that the body had taken preemptive measures to guarantee a seamless voting process.

The acquisition of essential vehicles to enable mobility and the planned deployment of police across the country indicate that preparations are well advanced. Akok went on to say that the commission has been given funding by the government, which allows them to start the election process. Furthermore, a well crafted draft schedule has been created, ready to start voter registration in June subject to stakeholder approval.

"The pre-election activities will start with accommodation at the election headquarters in Juba, and then we will go to the 10 states and three administrative areas," Akok said.
