Uganda Law Society President Ssemakadde and Vice Asiimwe Removed from Office Over Misconduct
The expulsion follows widespread public outrage over Ssemakadde’s offensive remarks directed at Justice Jane Frances Abodo, Uganda's Director of Public Prosecutions. His comments, which included a derogatory and demeaning reference to her as a “Karamojong vagina,” were widely condemned as both vulgar and disrespectful, sparking a national outcry.
In a dramatic turn of events, Uganda Law Society (ULS) President, Peter Ssemakadde, and his Vice President, Florence Asiimwe, have been expelled from their respective positions following allegations of serious misconduct.
ULS Secretary Phillip Munaabi announced the decision late Saturday evening, emphasizing the urgent need to regain public trust in Uganda's legal profession.
“To safeguard the reputation of the Uganda Law Society and prevent further harm, we resolve to expel Mr. Isaac Ssemakadde Kimeze from the Council,” the statement read.
The ULS Council stated that these disrespectful remarks have badly harmed the society's reputation and disrupted critical ties with funders, threatening legal aid programs that help over 40,000 needy people in Uganda.
However, the decision has sparked significant controversy, with Ssemakadde’s supporters vowing to challenge the expulsion. They have raised concerns about the legality of the ULS Council’s actions, questioning whether due process was followed in reaching this conclusion.
