Boycott in the House: Ministers Skip MP Ssegirinya's Tribute Session

The Ugandan Parliament was left in astonishment and conjecture after a large number of ministers refused to attend a special tribute session for the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. These high-ranking officials' absence has sparked speculation regarding political tensions and splits within the government. MPs paid their tribute to the contentious representative, but the empty seats spoke volumes, leaving the public and other lawmakers wondering.

The motion to honor the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya was notably introduced by Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu, a move that surprised many as it deviated from the tradition of government representatives leading such proceedings. This unusual circumstance drew sharp criticism from Bugiri County MP Asuman Basalirwa, who openly questioned the government’s motives.
"Why did the government fail to move the motion?" Basalirwa asked, hinting at potential political undercurrents behind the apparent disengagement. His remarks underscored growing concerns about whether the government’s absence was a calculated decision or merely a break from protocol.
Speaker Anita Among responded, "All members were informed, and it's not right to speculate about the absence of the ministers."
The boycott was briefly interrupted when Third Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Nakadama arrived, but only after Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu had moved the resolution. Despite his late arrival, the absence of other ministers loomed big, casting a cloud over the session. The reasons for the ministers' boycott are unclear, raising suspicion about potential political difficulties or a lack of unanimity within the government.

Former Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya died on Thursday from Lubaga Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

Ssegirinya will be laid to rest on Sunday, January 12, in his ancestral home in Masaka District. Thousands are expected to attend, including family members, political leaders, and supporters from across the country.
