Breaking the Binary: A Look at Celebrities who have come out as Homosexuals.

Sexual orientation is a complex and deeply personal aspect of one’s identity. It can take years for someone to come to terms with their sexuality, especially if it falls outside the traditional heterosexual or homosexual binaries.

Over the years many celebrities have bravely come out as homosexuals, using their platforms to challenge stereotypes. In this blog post we take a closer look at some of these influential figures and the impact they’ve had on the wider cultural conversation about homosexuality.

Dove Cameron

The 27-year-old singer and actress released her LGBTQ+ anthem, "Boyfriend," in 2022, but she's vocalized that she always knew she was queer.

"I wasn't ever afraid of people knowing who I loved," she explained to E! News. "More so, I was afraid of people having access to the human parts of me in an industry that can be so anti-human. That was definitely an emotional thing, but it turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Mentally, I'm so much better now."

Frank Ocean

In 2012, Frank penned a letter on Tumblr that addressed his sexuality and revealed his first love was a man. His music is clad with romantic references to both men and women, but he has not explicitly stated he's bisexual. In an interview with GQ, he was asked about his sexuality, to which he responded "I'll respectfully say that life is dynamic and comes along with dynamic experiences, and the same sentiment that I have towards genres of music, I have towards a lot of labels and boxes."

Reneé Rapp

The "Too Well" singer opened up about her bisexuality in a 2023 interview with Call Her Daddy's Alex Cooper.

"I was just in panic constantly. I wasn't [straight], but I was so freaked out by the idea of my sexuality not being finite or people laughing at me — or me laughing at myself — that I hated the first year of filming [The Sex Lives of College Girls]," she shared. The singer has also written tracks like "What Can I Do" about falling for a female friend.

Kit Connor

The Heartstopper star came out in October 2022 after being accused of queer baiting. "back for a minute. i’m bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. i think some of you missed the point of the show. bye," Kit wrote on Twitter nearly two months after he initially deleted the app.

Megan Fox

In a 2008 interview with GQ, Megan said she could "see herself in a relationship with a girl." Fast forward to 2021, when she confirmed her bisexuality with an Instagram post. "Putting the B in #LGBTQIA for over two decades," she captioned her selfie.

Olivia Ponton

Olivia celebrated the beginning of Pride 2021 by opening up about her sexuality. "I want to announce that I’m bisexual, and I’m now proud to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community," the TikTok star revealed in an interview with Teen Vogue. Olivia says that until recently, though, she didn't even think about bisexuality as an option for her. "I feel like it didn't really even occur to me until I moved out here [to Los Angeles] that being bisexual was even a possibility in my brain," she said.

Keiynan Lonsdale

The Love, Simon star came out on Instagram in 2017. "I like to change my hair, I like to take risks with how I dress, I like girls, & I like guys (yes), I like growing, I like learning, I like who I am and I really like who I'm becoming," he wrote in his caption.

Lady Gaga

From the beginning of her career, pop culture icon Lady Gaga has been vocal about her bisexuality and support of the LGBTQ+ community. In 2009, she told British television host Jonathan Ross that her megahit "Poker Face" was inspired by her often "think[ing] about women" while "having sex with her boyfriend." However, in 2019, the star touched on bisexual exclusion during a visit to the historic Stonewall bar in New York City. "I may not, to some people, be considered a part of this community, even though I like girls sometimes. I would never degrade the fight you have endured," she said.

Lauren Jauregui

In an open letter that was posted on Billboard, the former Fifth Harmony member and popstar revealed that she was bisexual while addressing Trump and his supporters. "I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it," she wrote. "I am proud to be part of a community that only projects love and education and the support of one another."

Halsey

Halsey has been pretty open about her bisexuality since before they became a breakout star on the music scene. They continue to fight for bisexual representation in music and even released several songs about being bisexual on their albums, including a duet with Lauren Jauregui called "Strangers."

Kali Uchis

The "Moonlight" singer opened up to The Day about her bisexuality during an interview. "I've been bisexual my whole life. … People are constantly trying to find something to invalidate," she said. "I want more people in the Latin community to feel like they can express themselves freely and not have to confine themselves."

Lili Reinhart

In an interview with Flaunt Magazine, Lili said that she didn't want to be accused of faking her bisexuality for attention, but she's known for years that she's bisexual.

Tyler Blackburn

In a 2019 interview with The AdvocatePretty Little Liars alum Tyler Blackburn revealed that he is bisexual.

"I'm queer. I've identified as bisexual since [I was] a teenager," he said. "I just want to feel powerful in my own skin, and my own mind, and in my own heart."

Cardi B

The Grammy-winning rapper addressed her sexuality on Twitter after she was accused of queer baiting by Rolling Stone. "I'm married to a man, but I have expressed soo much about my bisexuality and my experiences with girls. All of a sudden, 'queer baiting' is the new word & people use it to the ground!" she wrote.

Anitta

The "Envolver" hitmaker initially came out in her 2018 Netflix docuseries but later opened up about her sexuality with the LA Times. "I only told my mom after I kissed a guy because … I didn’t know how to feel. I thought there was something wrong with me for wanting to kiss a guy and a girl. But my mom just said, 'So what?'" she told the outlet in 2022.
