Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, a towering figure in Tanzanian and African politics, has sadly passed away at the age of 98.


 Mwinyi served as the country's as the second president from 1985 to 1995, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, diplomacy, and dedication to the betterment of his nation.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced the passing of the former President, who had been hospitalized since February 24, 2024, due to a chest illness.

Previous to his presidency, Mwinyi held prominent positions including Interior Minister and Vice President. Additionally, he served as the chairman of the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, from 1990 to 1996.

Ali Hassan Mwinyi entered matrimony with Siti Mwinyi in 1960, and their union blessed them with six sons and six daughters. Since his retirement, Mwinyi has chosen to remain away from public attention, opting to reside in Dar es Salaam.
