With the looming deadline of the expiration of current IDs set for May 2025,the Minister of State in the Ministry, Gen David Muhoozi revealed that the mass enrolment exercise which will also allow for new registrations is expected to run up to January 2025.

Gen Muhoozi attributed the delay in starting the exercise primarily to gaps in preparations at the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA), such as the lack of funds for recruiting registration staff and delays in procuring essential systems, among other factors.

The Minister addressed concerns raised by MPs regarding the delays and the potential consequences of not having the upgraded IDs on time, emphasizing that these delays could lead to significant disruptions in the country due to the central role the document plays in everyday life and business operations.
