UCC Takes Action against Data Depletion Surge, Unveils Comprehensive Guideline Measures

As complaints about rapid data depletion escalate among mobile users, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has stepped in to address the issue. Acknowledging the frustration expressed by users, the Executive Director of UCC, Thembo Nyombi, has outlined procedures to follow when encountering such problems.
Nyombi was responding to consumer concerns about disparities in data consumption that were growing.

"In my capacity at UCC, I acknowledge the multiple complaints regarding data usage specifically issues where data seems to vanish or deplete faster than anticipated," stated Nyombi.

Nyombi underlined that the UCC's regulatory responsibilities include consumer protection, underscoring the significance of finding a solution to these problems. He did point out that in order to address these inequities definitively, a proper process needs to be followed because of the sensitivities involved.

In order to address these issues, Nyombi provided the following actions that customers can take:
•    If customers find that their data consumption is inconsistent, they should get in touch with their telecom operator directly and lodge a formal complaint.
•    Customers may ask for a thorough audit of their data consumption for the pertinent time frame.
•    Customers are required to start the data usage audit for their mobile numbers, providing consent for analysis while preserving data privacy.
If customers are not happy with the results, Nyombi provides other channels for support.

Singer Moses Ssali, better known by his stage name Bebe Cool, threatened legal action against Airtel Uganda in February of this year after his data bundle of 22GB quickly ran out on his mobile phone number even though he was not utilizing the data.

"On January 16, at around 9.56pm, I entered into a prepaid contract with your company to purchase 22GB of monthly data at Shs50,000 (Shs2,000). It is your operational policy that mobile data bundle depletion depends on a customer's internet usage based on the volumes of the megabyte file browsed," said the singer via his lawyers.

Azawi, real name Priscilla Zawedde, recently joined the chorus of people criticizing Airtel by revealing that the 22GB of data she purchased disappeared after two days even though she didn't use it for streaming.
