At the African Games 2023, Kobugabe and Mbabazi made history by clinching Uganda's first-ever gold medal in badminton. Their victory was celebrated nationwide, inspiring a new generation of athletes in the country.


On Sunday in Accra, Ghana, the dynamic duo left their mark by defeating their Algerian opponents, Halla Bouksani and Tanina Violette Mammeri, in an exhilarating final with scores of 23-21, 21-14.

Once more, Kobugabe demonstrated her prowess in the women’s singles category, securing the silver medal after a challenging match against South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz, with a scoreline of 21-16, 17-21, 19-21. Despite the loss, Kobugabe's performance underscored her resilience and exceptional skills on the court.


The African Games have been a platform for badminton excellence since its inclusion in 2003, providing opportunities for athletes across the continent to showcase their talent and compete at the highest level. 


Uganda’s historic gold medal achievement highlights the increasing prowess of African nations in the sport, showcasing the dedication and hard work of athletes like Kobugabe and Mbabazi.

The Uganda women's handball team finds themselves in Group B for the upcoming competition, alongside formidable opponents such as Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali. This grouping sets the stage for intense and competitive matches as each team vies for a spot in the knockout stages. With strong competition ahead, the Uganda team will need to bring their A-game to every match, showcasing their skills and determination as they strive to advance in the tournament.


The team arrived in the capital city, Accra on Monday afternoon and straight away checked in at the official games venue.


Head coach Aziz Yakoub is optimistic about a great performance during the handball games that kick off on March 14, 2024, at Bortyman Sports Complex. 


“We have prepared well and expect a competitive championship. The players are physically and mentally ready for the task at hand” Yakoub who is deputized by Jimmie Remmie Orotin stated.
