All Members of Parliament representing Masaka City have chosen to abstain from attending a parliamentary caucus meeting called by the National Unity Platform (NUP) and summoned by Bobi Wine.

The decision highlights a significant political divide within the party and indicates tensions between the leadership and members who are dissatisfied with recent actions, such as the impeachment of the Nyendo MP from the Parliamentary Commission, replaced by Francis Zaake of Mityana Municipality.

Last week, Mathias Mpuuga, who previously served as Parliamentary Commission, was recalled due to corruption allegations. Lina Zedriga, the Acting President of NUP, communicated this decision in a letter dated March 15, 2024, citing Mpuuga's failure to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the controversial allocation of Shs500 million to ruling party commissioners in Parliament.

“Big congratulations to me! I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to my party, especially the incredible decision-making organ known as NEC, for endorsing my nomination as a parliamentary commissioner” Hon Zaake posted on his X handle.
The decision led to division within the NUP party, with certain MPs, particularly those from Masaka City, expressing dissatisfaction. This discontent may have influenced their decision to boycott today's party meeting.

According to party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP Parliamentary team discussed a number of issues. As a united family, we kept pressing on in demanding better and accountable leadership in our country.

“Today we held a meeting of the NUP Parliamentary team to discuss a number of issues. As a family, we'll keep pressing on in demanding for better and accountable leadership in our Country.” He posted on X.

It's noteworthy that the National Unity Platform boasts the largest number of opposition members, totaling 57 parliamentary representatives in the 11th Parliament.

Masaka City is represented by two NUP members in the 11th Parliament: Matthias Mpuuga, who represents Nyendo-Mukungwe, and ABED Bwanika, who represents Kimanya-Kabonera.
