Student Protester Standoff: 47 Arrested in Anti-EACOP March to Parliament

In a dramatic turn of events at Parliament, 47 university students were arrested during a high-stakes anti-EACOP (East African Crude Oil Pipeline) protest.
The students, representing various universities, had gathered to voice their opposition to the controversial project, which they argue poses significant environmental and social risks. The protest escalated as students attempted to march towards Parliament, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement.

After gathering at Wampewo Avenue, the demonstrators—representing Kyambogo, Makerere, and Kampala International Universities—were encircled and taken into custody while attempting to deliver a petition to Parliament against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, said the suspects were surrounded, before boarding the three taxis that were supposed to drop them at Parliament and others at NEMA offices.
Before this article, the suspects were charged with inciting violence and unlawful assembly and are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station.

A group of seven people, one of whom was an activist from Belgium, were also detained last week while delivering a petition to the Chinese government asking them to stop supporting the China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), which is one of the main sponsors of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.
