This significant event will unfold in the bustling capital city of Kampala next month, bringing together experts, practitioners, and stakeholders from across the continent to exchange knowledge, innovations, and best practices in the field of blood transfusion.

Commenting on the commencement of the preparatory meetings, Dr. Dorothy Kyeyune Byabazaire, Executive Director of Uganda Blood Transfusion Service (UBTS), voiced confidence regarding the hosting of the congress.

"We are thrilled to be hosting the Africa Society for Blood Transfusion Congress in Uganda. This is an important opportunity for us as country and the health sector at large.  This is great news for the country, as it will be the first time that Uganda has hosted a blood transfusion congress.”

The 11th AfSBT congress in Kampala is expected to attract thousands of world experts in blood transfusion; policy makers and other key stakeholders who have a critical role to play in the field of transfusion medicine and science.

According to the Minister for Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the conference presents Uganda with a valuable opportunity to demonstrate its proficiency in blood transfusion services.
“I appreciate the fact that we are going to have scientists from all over the world, this should enable us put our minds together and deliberate on some of the best practices and lessons learnt in making blood available to our population,” she said.

Per World Health Organization guidelines, a nation achieves self-sufficiency in safe blood when it collects blood equivalent to 1% of its population. With Uganda's current population totaling approximately 48 million people and projected to grow to 55.0 million by 2025, meeting this benchmark is crucial for ensuring an adequate and sustainable blood supply.
